2017 has been interesting for us Americans in many ways; especially with resurgence of the extreme far right. In most democratic countries hate speech and extreme fringe organization that promote violence are deemed unlawful. In our America, it is called freedom of speech. Whether we agree or disagree that is what it is.
Business Leaders having amnesia, feeling despair, being seduced or just plain embracing hope…?
During the 2016 election cycle no major business organization (e.g. Business round table, National Association of Manufacturers, Chamber of Commerce) supported Donald Trump. Trump economic doctrine is likely to crash and burn... then why are business leaders who disdained him because of his toxic social values now are embracing him?
Could it be that they see reality and it is so dark that they embrace HOPE?!
Trump and the Republican party did not win. I have said many times before “The Democrats and Hilary gave the election to Trump”. Trump tried his best to lose as he had much more to gain financially from losing than winning. Unfortunately, the Democratic Party and Hilary refused to oblige.
The loss of America as a joyful place of hope is what we mourn. It offered hope, respect and welcome to immigrants. The arc of history was bending towards justice. Women were feeling safer and making progress towards gender equality. We set the example and standard on openness As Bill Clinton once said ‘the power of our example is stronger than example of our power’.
Donald Trump ran a brilliant campaign and understood what is needed to win the Presidency. On the other hand the democrats did a bad job of bringing out their base. 50 million Americans wanted a change – essentially any change. Let us hope these 50 million Americans know something the rest of us missed...
Well I can certainly say I welcome the arrival of election day. We can now at least get a breather from the non-stop coverage and endless arguing over the personalities of the candidates. I’ve been most discouraged in this election cycle by the utter lack of deep discussion of policy, and laser like focus on email habits or video tapes of crude statements made privately more than a decade ago. Folks, this whole thing is entertainment and nothing more.
Trump recently made a comment in Hindi, and said "we love Hindus, we love India..." and put out a campaign ad for "Indians" (airing on Indian TV channels in the US). The comments from the Indians as reported by BBC are so reflective of what many minorities think of Trump and his shady tactics.
