Crash Dieting - The meaning is in the phrase "crash"

As girls we are programmed at an early age to maintain or loose weight. Working out is hard.
So what do we start doing, dieting. Dieting becomes a common word among us. And then we pickup a phrase called crash dieting. Probably shouldn't do anything that starts with the word crash (meaning: collide violently) - right? Why would anyone voluntarily want to violently collide?

Mirror effect - workout

You've seen those people at the gym looking in the mirror, flexing, pumping weights... checking themselves out? Did you think - what a show off, so into
themselves, full of it....? Well I did! I judged without really knowing that there are so many benefits of looking at yourself while working out.

Democracy vs. Republic

Some time ago a smart person corrected me when I identified America as a Democracy. He said USA is a Republic – or Democratic Republic. I did not understand the difference so looked it up and he was right. You could also call us Representative Democracy but I do not think that is true today with < 50% voter turnout...

What do you mean "Obama's Legacy"?

There has been much reflection regarding President Obama's legacy in the final days of his presidency.  While the biased media celebrates his legacy and anoints him as the progressive savior of hope and change, the reality is that Mr. Obama was at best an under-achieving president, and possibly one of the worst ever.

In about 24 hours, Donald Trump will be Barack Obama's president, and his legacy will begin to vanish before his very eyes.

Embracing HOPE over despair and reality

Business Leaders having amnesia, feeling despair, being seduced or just plain embracing hope…?

During the 2016 election cycle no major business organization (e.g. Business round table, National Association of Manufacturers, Chamber of Commerce) supported Donald Trump. Trump economic doctrine is likely to crash and burn... then why are business leaders who disdained him because of his toxic social values now are embracing him?

Could it be that they see reality and it is so dark that they embrace HOPE?!

Are humans as a species, the worst?

It is sad that mean spirited prejudices based on religion, color, education, social stature or race have not really reduced over the course of human civilization. Even in the 21st Century, in a progressive country like USA, deep rooted prejudices are still strongly embedded.

Humility for humankind in the ecosystem would be a good start but sadly I do not believe that is possible. As a species we really are the worst.

Not The Founders' Fault

It isn't The Founders' fault that Hillary's campaign failed to turn out voters in Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Many of the people upset with the election results have been calling the electoral college outdated. Here is my defense of the process.

Mr. Trump - don't drop that baton

While the Republican programs will create significant long term issues with the deficit, income inequality and social order, in the near term we are likely to see the continued economic success based on the Foundation that President Obama developed.

That is the ultimate irony that President-elect may succeed economically (whether foreign affairs or social issues sink him is a separate set of issues) because of what President Obama bequeathed him.

Unleash the free market in healthcare!

What’s ailing our current health care system and what can we do to improve it? I have been discussing in prior posts what’s ailing our current health care system, and why I think political solutions will only perpetuate the problems.  So what are my big ideas?  I don’t claim to have all the answers, and the ideas I’m about to present aren’t even original.  However, I think more people need to at least hear the ideas and their underlying rationale to decide for themselves what makes sense.

The Morning After

It seems that the 2016 Presidential Election results have generated much happiness and excitement for some, and much anger and angst for others.  I think this is a good moment to take a step back and ask ourselves why this need to be the case.

For the big picture, I think the extreme outpouring of emotion on both sides reveals the problems of centralization of power and majoritarianism.  When so much power is in the hands of a central government, everything in life is up for grabs by majority vote.

I still don't get it - Trump is POTUS?!

Well do not worry Americans. Have faith in Trump as he alone will make everything perfect again. Is that not the perfect definition of democracy – one man controlling all and alone making things perfect?!

We decided to elect a marginally successful businessman with multiple failed companies and bankruptcies as our next President OVER an intelligent woman with lifetime public service who has made a couple (yes two only) bad judgement calls during the lifetime of service.

Why I will not be voting today

Well I can certainly say I welcome the arrival of election day.  We can now at least get a breather from the non-stop coverage and endless arguing over the personalities of the candidates.  I’ve been most discouraged in this election cycle by the utter lack of deep discussion of policy, and laser like focus on email habits or video tapes of crude statements made privately more than a decade ago.  Folks, this whole thing is entertainment and nothing more.
